It’s that time of year again when Coachella takes over social media; festival-goers fill our feeds with their latest outfits, and TikTok is rife with opinion videos on the ‘best’ and ‘worst’ dressed celebrities.
The festival, set in the Californian desert, is notoriously as much about fashion as it is about the music. Since the mid-2010s, attendees have taken their outfits to new levels and each year we see fresh trends emerging from the sea of influencers and A-list celebrities that create content there.
This year’s trending items have been cowboy boots and cowboy hats, as seen in the thousands across social media. Although a usual feature for the desert setting, popularity could be attributed to the release of Beyonce’s eighth studio album, Cowboy Carter, earlier this year. From sparkly pink to traditional brown leather styles, the ‘Western’ influence made a return, initially being a classic when the festival was arguably at its peak with celebrities like Vanessa Hudgens being the top trendsetter to watch.
Many celebrities opted for what is becoming known as ‘anti-Coachella’ looks. Commonly identified by a much more day-to-day style, these outfits appear low effort - although, not necessarily low budget. Since Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber wore jeans and t-shirts to the festival back in 2023, it is not surprising that others have jumped on board with their laid-back approach this time. Well-known British influencer, Saffron Barker, chose to keep it casual by wearing a football top paired with the viral Adidas Gazelle trainers. Even stars like Olivia Rodrigo ditched the glamorous costumes as she was seen performing on stage in Converse shoes, black trousers, and a white crop top.
Amongst the most talked about outfits from the festival is Emma Roberts’ party outfit - but sadly not for good reason. She has been criticised for ‘missing the mark’ when it comes to nailing a great Coachella look; with many saying she had gone too smart in a black dress that looked more appropriate for the office than a festival.
Social media users have taken to X to share their frustration with the current fashion at Coachella. Some commenters complained that they ‘miss’ the previous years at the festival where Bohemian and flowy styles, topped off with flower crowns, were everywhere to be seen.
However, there were a few outstanding outfits that harboured praise all around. To mention one, Gwen Stefani shone on stage in a quirky cut-out set, layered with fishnet tights, by designer Ashton Michael. She coordinated her long acrylic nails to match the pattern and paid homage to her 90s makeup style by wearing her signature face gems.
Perhaps next year’s festival will bring back the classic Coachella fashion parade, or maybe it will only become more casual!
