Sustainable Fashion at the Grammys

Awards Season, while about the winners, is, perhaps equally also all about the fashion. As our favourite celebrities get ready to celebrate, we all take note of who wears what, and at this year's Grammys it seems like sustainable picks made the most appearances. From vintage picks, to upcycled items, to rewearing what’s in their wardrobe, the biggest names in pop culture made a start on showing quite how easy it is to bring slow fashion to the mainstream.

With not one but two sustainable looks, Miley Cyrus reigns supreme. First, gracing the red carpet in an artisan-crafted peekaboo Maison Margiela Cleopatra dress made of 14,000 golden safety pins. Taking 675 hours to be put together by hand, this look really put in the work to show how amazing and out-there ethical fashion can really be.

During her on-stage performance, Miss Hannah Montana wore a vintage silver fringe Bob Mackie dress - going viral for her commentary whilst singing “Flowers.”

Another notable female singer, everyone’s current favourite heartbreaker, Olivia Rodrigo, wore a white 1995 Versace siren gown. With a love-heart neckline and simple beading, this dress was very romantic. After dawning a 1995 Chanel suit to the White House, it seems Rodrigo is also looking to lead the way with the slow fashion movement.

Proving that wearing slow fashion doesn’t mean you can’t keep up with the latest styles, Coi Leray sported the pantless trend, a craze started by Bella Hadid last year, in a 2019 archival Saint Laurent jacket and leotard.

Wearing a vintage Loretta Lynn dress, which she sourced herself, Lana Del Rey rocked a black, puff-sleeve floral dress. And on that moody note, Caroline Polachek sported another vintage pick, in a 1998 Olivier Theyskens gown. The huge black gown coursed with crimson veins and arteries proves that no matter your aesthetic, from grunge to preppy, sustainable fashion is always an option.

E! red carpet host, Laverne Cox, wore a fittingly Valentine’s-esque dress from Comme des Garçons 2015 collection. Retaining her slow fashion streak, after her last look for the Emmy Awards, the dress was short with over-the-top hip padding and made from a bright red PVC-style material. Showing how you can keep it sexy and

Shopping from her own wardrobe, Oprah was spotted in 2004/5 Valentino couture, while Maggie Baird wore a head-to-toe sustainable outfit from dress to shoes and accessories.

Finally, Billie Eilish kept it casual whilst subtly shouting out her nominated track, “What Was I Made For?” in a vintage Barbie baseball jacket. The varsity look had been upcycled by Chrome Hearts, giving it a modern edge, and was paired with a contrastingly formal white shirt with black tie and trousers.

While these looks weren’t necessarily groundbreaking, although Miley’s gold dress is bound to be remembered, the Grammys proved how easy it is to rock an ethical outfit and how each item, whether archival or something that’s just been in your wardrobe for years, deserves a new lease of life.
